It's the trendy health kick making a splash in the UK.

But almost one in ten wild swimming spots in England contain potentially life-threatening bacteria, concerning data revealed today.

Dozens of locations along coasts, lakes and rivers failed to meet the minimum water quality standard for 2024, meaning they contained disturbingly high levels of faecal matter.

It marks a two-fold rise on the number rated 'poor' in just a year and is the highest figure recorded since the current rating system was introduced in 2015.

Officials blamed the surge on 27 new bathing sites, 18 of which did not meet the threshold in their first year of testing.

But ministers, who today labelled the figures 'unacceptable', warned it highlighted just how much pollution is being pumped into England's rivers and estuaries.

Environment Agency Chairman, Alan Lovell, also conceded there was still much work to do to tackle pollution.

The figures, compiled by the agency, test for harmful bacteria during the official swimming season — May and September.
