Taylor Sheridan is at it again, folks. When the man isn’t beefing with Kevin Costner, he’s pumping out westerns. (And the occasional CIA drama.) The writer currently has three shows airing concurrently on Paramount, including Yellowstone, Lioness, and his newest series, Landman. Like many of Sheridan’s shows, Landman is ultimately about money and power, but this time, Sheridan replaced ranchers with roughnecks.
Landman is very loosely based on the Boomtown podcast, which tells the story of a modern-day gold rush set in Texas’s oil-rig patch. Feel free to check it out if you want to brush up on your oil-industry knowledge. Sheridan keeps the setting and inserts Billy Bob Thornton.
Thornton plays Tommy Norris, the crisis manager of an oil company owned by Monty Miller (Jon Hamm). His line of work becomes untenable when he’s forced to manage the billionaires funding the oil rig along with the men who work on it. His son Cooper (Jacob Lofland) is also determined to work in the dangerous oil patches so that he can one day learn enough to own an oil company himself.
Sheridan reportedly crafted the role with Thornton in mind. “I did this cameo for Taylor on 1883,” Thornton told the Los Angeles Times. “When they had the premiere for 1883 in Las Vegas, afterward at the dinner, I was sitting next to him and he said, ‘I’m writing a series for you called Landman, and I’m going to write it in your voice. It’s in the world of the oil business in Texas,’ and he explained the character to me, which was essentially kind of me if I were a landman. And I was very intrigued. Then once I read the first script or two, it was like, ‘Oh my goodness, this is my voice!’ ”
Well, if it’s good enough for Mr. Billy Bob, it’s good enough for me. According to The Hollywood Reporter, 5.2 million viewers tuned in to the premiere on November 17. If you have bandwidth for yet another Sheridan-created series in your life, we’ve provided Landman’s full release schedule and streaming information below.
How to Watch Landman
Thankfully, it’s a lot easier to watch Landman than Yellowstone. The oil-industry series is available weekly to all Paramount+ subscribers. Landman runs for ten episodes until the season finale in January. So far, Tommy has spent his time dealing with one crisis after another. Local cartels stole a plane and involved it in a failed drug-smuggling operation. Plus, an oil rig exploded and killed multiple patch workers. As we head toward the halfway point of the season, Tommy already has his hands full.
